Lanesboro Theater Gets International Recognition

LANESBORO, Minn. (AP) ― The Commonweal Theatre in Lanesboro has won a prestigious international award.

The Norwegian government is honoring the southeastern Minnesota theater company for its contribution to the legacy of playwright Henrik Ibsen, who's often called the father of modern drama.

The Commonweal is getting one of four scholarships for International Ibsen Projects. The award is worth $46,000. Artistic Director Hal Cropp says the money will go toward expanding the Commonweal's Ibsen Festival.

The Commonweal says it's the only theater in North America with an annual commitment to producing the works of the Norwegian playwright. Since 1998, the company has opened each season with a work from his canon.

It will stage Ibsen's "Hedda Gabler" next April and will take the show on the road across Minnesota.
