Armstrong Junior Stars In 'Gran Torino'

ST. PAUL (AP) ― Some members of the Twin Cities Hmong community will be watching the movie "Gran Torino" closely.

The Clint Eastwood film is the first major-studio movie to feature several prominent roles for Hmong actors. One star is Bee Vang, a junior at Robbinsdale Armstrong High School.

Vang said he never thought about acting before, but he gave it a shot.

He got the part, left town a week later, and had what he called the "summer vacation of a lifetime!"

Another Minnesotan, Dyane Garvey of St. Paul, was the film's Hmong technical adviser. Garvey, executive director of Hmong Arts Connection, worked with filmmakers to ensure the Hmong culture was accurately represented. She helped with costumes, set decorations and other things.

In the movie, Eastwood plays a racist Korean War vet who befriends Hmong teenagers next door and tries to protect them from gang violence.
