'Public Enemies' Fest In St. Paul Next Month

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ― St. Paul will remember its "Public Enemies" past next month.

The downtown Landmark Center will host a series of events timed to the release of the new movie starring Johnny Depp as John Dillinger. Landmark Center is a former federal building where many criminals of the 1930s were brought to justice.

The retrospective kicks off July 10 with a lecture by author Bryan Burrough, whose book was the basis for the "Public Enemies" film.

Gangster artifacts — including ransom notes from the kidnapping of Minnesota banker Ed Bremer — will be on display July 11.

On July 15 and 16, Twin Cities attorneys and judges will re-enact the 1934 trial of Dillinger's girlfriend, Billie Frechette. She was convicted of harboring Dillinger, public enemy No. 1.

"Public Enemies" was directed by "Miami Vice" auteur Michael Mann.
