St. Paul Chamber Orchestra President Steps Down

ST. PAUL (AP) ― The president and managing director of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra is stepping down for health reasons.

Bruce Coppock has served as president and managing director since 1999 -- longer than any other person in that position. But Coppock, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2006, has told the orchestra's bord that his cancer has spread.

He says he'll focus on his treatment and doing the things he loves.

Coppock has led the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra through many changes and emerged as a national leader among administrators of classical music organizations.

Among the changes, Coppock oversaw a decision in 2003 to use a rotating group of "artistic partners" to direct the orchestra.

Coppock will soon begin a new course of chemotherapy at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
