Will Steger Honored By National Geographic

WASHINGTON (AP) ― Minnesota explorer Will Steger was honored by National Geographic Adventure magazine Thursday night for his lifetime achievements in exploration and his Global Warming 101 Expedition.

Richard Branson, who accompanied Steger on the expedition, also was honored. Eleven others received awards for accomplishments in exploration, conservation and humanitarian work.

"I am deeply honored by the National Geographic Lifetime Achievement Award," Steger said in a prepared statement. "It will continue to inspire my efforts to solve global warming through the educational programming and policy work of the Will Steger Foundation."

Global Warming 101 is the first initiative of Steger's foundation, which was established in January 2006. It is intended to raise public awareness of global warming as seen through Steger's polar expeditions.

Steger also honored at the 2007 Lowell Thomas Awards for his journeys to the North Pole, Antarctica and his recent Global Warming 101 Expedition to Baffin Island, the northernmost part of Canada.

Steger splits his time between the Twin Cities and his home and education center in Ely, Minn.
