Election officials say Minnesota's voter turnout could come close to a record on Nov. 4.
Secretary of State Mark Ritchie is predicting 80 percent in 2008, compared with 77 percent in 2004. The record was 83 percent in 1956.
More than 60,000 new voters have registered in the little over a month, and Ritchie expects registration to approach 90 percent by the time the polls close on election day.
Turnout at precinct caucuses in February broke turnout records, but led to long lines. The caucuses are run by the parties, not the state, but election officials statewide took note.
Cindy Reichert is the director of elections for the City of Minneapolis. She says the city will have the highest number of election workers ever. There will be extra screening and training for judges, and extra ballots will be printed.
