Primary 101: Why We Vote On Tuesday

ST. PAUL (WCCO) ― Just because a political party officially endorses a candidate doesn't mean he or she is automatically on the general election ballot.

Anyone can run and voters sort out who will be on the general election ballot on primary day. Minnesota's primary is Tuesday.

Al Franken's got the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party endorsement. He's also got millions of dollars in a campaign war-chest and said he's the only one who can beat Republican Norm Coleman.

He's not the only Democrat running for Senate. Priscilla Lord Faris has been campaigning all around the state against Franken. She said because he lived outside Minnesota for 36 years, Franken's just not as close to Minnesota issues as he should be.

The Independence Party also has a spirited primary campaign for Senate underway. Former U.S. Sen. Dean Barkley jumped into the race after Jesse Ventura decided not to run. The endorsed Independence candidate is Steven Williams and former Independence Party chairman Jack Uldrich is in the race.

It might not feel like it, but really, the winners of the primary are the last candidates standing.

There will also be some city, county, judicial and school board races to vote on Tuesday. Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.
