Barack Obama plans to spend the final night of the Democratic primary season right here in Minnesota. Once the votes in Montana and South Dakota are counted, Obama could claim victory over Hillary Clinton at Xcel Energy Center.
Like kids in a classroom, Obama supporters sat down Monday afternoon in the concourse at Xcel Energy Center to paint posters for their favorite Presidential candidate. Among them was 18-year-old Anna Zagaria who will be voting for the first time this fall.
Zagaria volunteered for Obama's campaign after watching him speak at the Target Center, and she's fully aware that he could make history at the Xcel Tuesday night.
"I feel like I have a responsibility to vote for him because I think he can change our country," said Zagaria.
While Zagaria's sign says "hope," other signs are already indicating a nomination for Obama. Perhaps the most telling was a comment made by Bill Clinton in which he acknowledged that Monday could be the last day he is ever involved in a Presidential campaign.
"It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to go around and campaign for her for President," he said.
Earlier Monday, Obama acknowledged that between Tuesday and Wednesday he expects to have the number of delegates needed to achieve the Democratic nomination. While he refused to look that far ahead, he did seem ready to move on, telling reporters that he called Hillary Clinton to tell her he has respected her campaign.
"I told her that once the dust settled I was looking forward to meeting her at a time and place of her choosing," said Obama.
An Obama spokesman said they are expecting about 20,000 people to show up at Xcel Energy Center Tuesday night. The rally is free and people can RSVP online, but they are asking people to leave bags and other personal items at home for security reasons.
