With Thanksgiving Over, Senate Recount Resumes

ST. PAUL (AP) ― With the Thanksgiving break over, election officials in cities across Minnesota resume their recount in the U.S. Senate race.

The recounting of ballots in the race between Republican incumbent Norm Coleman and Democrat Al Franken must be finished by Friday. The state canvassing board meets Dec. 16 to review challenged ballots and certify results.

The board hopes to complete its work by Dec. 19, but will continue longer if necessary.

At the start of the Thanksgiving weekend, 86 percent of the votes statewide had been recounted, with Coleman holding a lead of 292 votes over Franken.

Norm Coleman was born in New York City in 1949. Al Franken was born in New York City in 1951.
