Madia Raised $161,000 For 3rd District Race

ST. PAUL (AP) ― Democratic congressional candidate Ashwin Madia said he raised $161,000 in slightly more than two months last year.

Madia announced his fundraising total for the fourth quarter at a Capitol news conference. He said the amount shows he is a serious candidate.

Madia -- a former Marine who served in Iraq -- aims to appeal to Republicans and others concerned about the Iraq War.

He is up against two other Democrats -- state Sen. Terri Bonoff and Edina Mayor Jim Hovland -- for the party's endorsement in the western Twin Cities suburbs.

The seat is open because Republican Rep. Jim Ramstad is retiring. State Rep. Erik Paulsen is the only Republican running to succeed him.
