Iron Range Teacher Deal Unsettled After 18 Months

MOUNTAIN IRON, Minn. (AP) ― The union representing St. Louis County School District teachers has yet to settle with the district on a contract for the 2007 to 2009 period, less than six months before the contract would expire.

Education Minnesota Local 1406 represents about 180 teachers in the district's seven schools. It's been in mediation with district officials for months, trying to work out differences on salary and health insurance.

Teachers are still working under the contract that expired on June 30, 2007. Local president Dave Fazio says the union is now looking at completing work on both the current contract and the one for 2009 to 2011, since the current one expires this June 30.

The district has seven small rural schools in Babbitt-Embarrass, Tower-Soudan, Orr, Cook, Cherry, Cotton and AlBrook.
