'U' Has Bright Hopes In Solar Car Race

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ― The University of Minnesota has sunny expectations for its solar-powered car.

The U's car -- named Centaurus -- hit the road Sunday in the 2008 North American Solar Challenge. The race pits 26 teams and their solar-powered cars on a 2,400-mile race from Plano, Texas, to Calgary, Alberta.

The race includes a stage stop in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Thursday and a brief checkpoint stop in Fargo, N.D., on Friday or Saturday. The race concludes July 28.

This year, the drivers get to sit upright. Previously, drivers lay almost flat to make the car more aerodynamic.

At the last North American Solar Challenge in 2005, the University of Minnesota finished second behind the University of Michigan.
