Macalester Senior Named Rhodes Scholar

ST. PAUL (AP) ― A senior at Macalester College is the 13th student in the St. Paul school's history to win a Rhodes Scholarship.

Michael Waul was named a Rhodes Scholar from his native Jamaica. He's the only recipient this year of the prestigious scholarship from the Caribbean. Waul was notified of the decision last Friday after he interviewed in Jamaica.

The 21-year-old is a biochemistry major and geography minor at Macalester. Waul will pursue a two-year master's degree in medicinal chemistry at Oxford University starting in September 2009.

Rhodes Scholarships were created in 1902 by the will of British philanthropist Cecil Rhodes.
