Rainy River Eliminates Troubled Football Program

INTERNATIONAL FALLS, Minn. (AP) ― Rainy River Community College in International Falls has eliminated its troubled football program because its players were defaulting on federal student loans at an alarming rates.

The U.S. Department of Education said almost one in three students at the school defaulted on their loans in 2005. Officials said that jeopardized the school's ability to provide those loans to any students in the future.

Two-thirds of the Rainy River students who defaulted on loans played football. By comparison, the default rate for all Minnesota colleges is 3 percent.

The school and several others in the state community college system have previously drawn scrutiny for relying almost exclusively on out-of-state players. Many of those players struggled in the classroom and left soon after the season ended.
