Minnesota Regents To Get Update On Physics Lab

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ― The University of Minnesota regents will get an idea of how construction is progressing on a cutting-edge physics laboratory in northern Minnesota.

The regents will be briefed Wednesday on the second phase of the NoVa underground lab, which is along the Ash River about 40 miles southeast of International Falls.

Contractors broke ground on the laboratory this spring and have been improving a logging road to the site and blasting a hole 450 feet long and 40 feet deep for the equipment.

When finished, the lab will study neutrinos, a common subatomic particle about which little is known.

University physics professor and project leader Marvin Marshak says the second phase of the project will start by the end of the summer when contractors begin constructing the building over the hole.
