80-Year-Old Dropout Gets His Diploma

HOPKINS, Minn. (WCCO) ― A man who quit high school 65 years ago now has his diploma.

Wayne Sueker, 80, of New Hope, Minn., said he dropped out of high school at the age of 15 because he was too smart. He skipped grades and finished early so he could go to the University of Minnesota and earn a civil engineering degree.

"Basically, because I was too bright and I would get my work done in class and start bugging the other kids," Sueker said "The teachers had the simple solution to that -- move you up another grade and hope to keep you busy. And it worked, somewhat."

Sueker said his wife always teased him about not having a high school diploma, so he went back and got his. He said he did it to satisfy his ego, and so he could buy a graduation cake for himself.

Commencement ceremonies were held Thursday night at Hopkins High School.
