Halloween Gopher Game Brings More Cops To Campus

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― This year's Halloween falling on a weekend has law enforcement ramping up their efforts to keep people safe.

Add a late night Gopher game in the mix, and you get increased enforcement all across the metro, to include the University of Minnesota Campus.

"All resources are in place," said University of Minnesota Police Chief Greg Hestness.

Hestness says his officers as well as Minneapolis police will patrol the stadium and campus, and handle traffic -- a heavy presence to make sure that during and after the game, students and their friends are well-behaved.

The university is also doing its part to make sure everyone has a safe and fun Halloween.

"We have a pretty aggressive Gophers After Dark program at Kauffman Memorial Union and McNamara Alumni Center. There's free movies, free bowling, free billiards, pop, pizza, activities just to create a positive environment for students," said Dan Wolter with the university.

Even the Gophers' head football coach reached out to students.

"There was an add in yesterday's Daily with Coach Brewster encouraging people to act responsibly, warning of the dangers of excessive drinking and the problems of underage drinking," said Wolter.

According to police, past problems after home games typically involve students and alcohol. Chief Hestness says since the beginning of this football season, 64 students have been taken to a hospital and medically detoxed.

Fraternities and sororities on Greek Row are taking extra steps to make those who come to their parties are old enough to drink and know when they've had enough.

"They've banded together and they've got eight or 10 private security. It's mainly just managing their door," said Hestness.

Extra Minneapolis officers will be out after the game to make sure parties on Greek Row and all of campus happen without incident.

Minneapolis police are also a part of an increased enforcement on area roadways. They will be out "trick-or-treating" for drunk drivers, not only on campus but metro-wide.
