Four brand new high schools start hosting students in the Twin Cities this week. They are in Woodbury, St. Michael-Albertville, Chanhassen and Farmington.
About 1,750 students are expected to attend the latter this year, according to Farmington principal Ben Kusch, who took WCCO-TV on a tour of the school's new, environmentally-friendly building.
"We've got some great natural light. You can see how much light is in this building ... we don't even have half the lights on," said Kusch as he walked through one gathering area. "All the lighting's fluorescent. We don't have those mercury vapor bulbs that take 15 minutes to turn on and just suck a lot of juice."
Sensors have been installed throughout the school that are not only motion-sensitive, but also heat-sensitive.
"All of these lights are on eight-minute timers, meaning if you trip it and there's no movement, eight minutes later, it'll turn off," said Kusch.
Additionally, there are other sensors in the school that discern sources of natural light and control and adjust lights that are closer to windows.
Kusch explained that the school's windows were planned out so that there would be shading in the summer months when the sun is high and there would be a warming effect in the winter when the sun is lower.
The school installed artificial turn similar to the turf installed at the new TCF Bank Stadium. The school will use it for football, soccer and lacrosse.
