Inside the Edina Learning Center you definitely get that classroom feel. There are tutors working with students, textbooks on the shelves and even hand sanitizers scattered throughout.
It's also the home of a service called "College Nannies and Tutors," and lately they have been in high demand.
The service has seven Twin Cities locations and more than 200 emergency on-call nannies. They are also located in 19 other states, and since the first H1N1 flu case was confirmed in Texas, business has gone up 25 percent.
"As a parent it's frantic. You have to get to work tomorrow and you are concerned about what to do with your kids because they can't go to school," said founder Joe Keeley.
Keeley, who is a parent himself, said his service is affordable because they charge by the nanny, not by the number of kids. Nannies cost between $17 and $23 an hour.
Before 9 a.m. Monday, Keeley's Edina office had more than a dozen requests, many from parents in the Orono School District who were scrambling after school was closed due to a probable H1N1 flu case. He expects it will get much busier before it slows down.
"We do expect it to increase. We are going to continue to monitor that and make sure our that nannies and tutors are prepared and understanding the symptoms," said Keeley.
Emergency nannies can be available within a couple of hours. Families in need of emergency childcare can sign up on the
College Nannies and Tutors website.
