Minn. Checking Whether It Subsidized N.D. Students

BRECKENRIDGE, Minn. (AP) ― The Minnesota Department of Education is looking into whether the Breckenridge school district received Minnesota taxpayer dollars for North Dakota students.

The inquiry was proposed by a tip from a parent who gave the department a list of students she believed lived in North Dakota but went to school in Breckenridge.

At the department's request, the district recently produced a list of nine students with North Dakota residency who went to school in Breckenridge last year.

Interim superintendent Warren Schmidt declined to discuss the issue other than saying it's complying with the law. He says the school board will discuss it Monday.

An education department spokeswoman could not confirm if Breckenridge actually received state aid for the North Dakota students.
