S. Minn. School Districts Approve Consolidation
BROWNTON, Minn. (WCCO) ―
Residents of four south-central Minnesota school districts have voted overwhelmingly to consolidate one financially troubled district into the other three.
Voters in McLeod West, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop, Glencoe-Silver Lake and Buffalo Lake-Hector all approved the plan, which was required for its passage. Unofficial vote totals were 3,115 for consolidation and 252 against.
McLeod West will be $2.5 million in the red at the end of the school year, which is more than two-thirds of its overall budget. If the vote had failed the district would have been dissolved by the McLeod County Commission, with an uncertain fate for the district's 500 students.
Proponents say the surviving districts will be strengthened with additional state funds from the new students.
