4-Day Week Saves Money For MACCRAY, But Not Enough

RAYMOND, Minn. (AP) ― The move to a four-day school week has saved the MACCRAY School District tens of thousands of dollars, but not enough to prevent future budget cuts.

Superintendent Greg Schmidt says the shortened week has saved the district about $65,000 in transportation costs and thousands more in energy use and in substitute teacher costs.

He expects total savings of $85,000 to $100,000 from the four-day week, but the exact number won't be known until the annual audit is done.

However, the district still has a small deficit in its general fund and needs to cut about $350,000 from its budget for the 2009-2010 school year.

Schmidt gave the financial update Monday evening at East Elementary School in Raymond in west-central Minnesota.
