Ex-Gopher Pleads Not Guilty To Assault

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ― A former University of Minnesota football player has pleaded not guilty to one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct stemming from an April incident with a drunken woman.

Dominic Jones entered the plea Thursday in Hennepin County District Court. According to the criminal complaint, Jones had sex with the 18-year-old woman, but she was too drunk to give consent.

The complaint says the woman and a female friend went to an apartment at University Village, where the woman drank eight shots of vodka. Three football players allegedly took turns having sex with the woman.

According to the complaint, Jones arrived later and also had sex with the woman. The act was allegedly recorded on a cell phone and police also identified Jones through DNA.

The other football players were not criminally charged, but were kicked off the team.

Jones' attorney, Earl Gray, wants to suppress the cell phone video from evidence, as well as an interview Jones gave to police after his arrest. A judge has yet to rule on those requests.

Gray said that in the April 24 interview with two police officers, Jones had a coach present but asked for an attorney four times. Gray said Jones didn't "say anything" in the interview, but he doesn't want a jury to see Jones declining to answer questions and requesting counsel.

Gray also said the interview should have ended when Jones requested a lawyer.
