Suspect Named In Dakota County Toddler Homicide

HASTINGS, Minn. (WCCO) ― A Twin Cities stepfather is accused of killing his little boy.

Investigators say they arrested 22-year-old Tylar Hokanson from Northfield after his 18-month-old stepson, Nicholas Miller, died in Wisconsin last week.

"Initially it's my understanding that the child's death was not considered suspicious," said Dave Bellows, Dakota County Chief Deputy Sheriff. "However, an autopsy was conducted by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's office. During the autopsy the medical examiner found injuries that were consistent with trauma to the child, recent trauma to the child."

Nicholas' grandmother said investigators "jumped at the easiest conclusion" and that they were wrong to arrest Hokanson, but officers disagree.

Dakota County attorneys are expected to charge Hokanson with murder Tuesday.

According to the FBI, there were 322 children between the ages of 1 and 4 murdered in the U.S. in 2007.
