Baby Left Outside Strip Club, Charges Considered

HOULTON, Wis. (WCCO) ― A Maplewood, Minn. man was arrested after leaving a 1 1/2-month-old baby inside a vehicle outside a Wisconsin strip club for up to three hours, according to the St. Croix County Sheriff.

The incident happened Wednesday night. Deputies were dispatched to the Cajun Club in Houlton, Wis. on a report of a child locked in a vehicle there, Sheriff Dennis Hillestad said.

It was about 30 degrees outside. The little boy was wearing a coat and was left strapped in his car seat.

They found the child in the car and ran a check on the vehicle's identification numbers. The owner, David Mantor, was paged in the club and arrested for misdemeanor child neglect, according to Hillestad.

Authorities said the baby appeared responsive and did not appear to be in distress, though exposed parts of his body were noted to be cold.

The baby was taken to Hudson Hospital for further inspection, where it was determined he had frostbite. The baby remained hospitalized Thursday morning, authorities said.

Hillestad said Mantor didn't seem worried about the child. The sheriff said Mantor at first didn't understand that he was in trouble.

"He had actually ... had intended to drive home," Hillestad said.

Instead he got a free ride to the county jail.

According to Hillestad, the mother of the child bailed out Mantor, her boyfriend.

Neighbor Donna Gervais was there when Mantor returned home.

"He said he was sorry that all this had happened and said that he had screwed up basically," Gervais said.

Mantor was arrested for misdemeanor child neglect, but the St. Croix County attorney is considering filing felony charges.

Both Minnesota and Wisconsin child protection services are involved in this case.
