A missing sex offender being sought by the Minneapolis Police Department sex crimes unit was caught by St. Paul Police.
John Gaines had been non-compliant for a few years. He had been ordered to register as a sex offender after being released from prison where he served 11 years for a robbery and sexual assault incident at a city grocery store in 1986.
According to Minneapolis Police, Gaines was believed to have been caught during a routine traffic stop. After checking warrants, St. Paul Police discovered he was wanted on a felony charge of non-compliance.
Gaines has been released from the Hennepin County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 20.
Gaines' case was covered by WCCO-TV crime reporter Caroline Lowe earlier this year in a story about the police department's sex crimes unit.
