Bail At $1M For Suspect In Park Employee Killing

LUVERNE, Minn. (AP) ― A district court judge denied a request on Wednesday to reduce bail from $1 million for the man accused of killing a southwestern Minnesota state park worker in 2001.

Randy Swaney, 36, appeared in court in Luverne in southwestern Minnesota.

His attorney argued that since Swaney has no previous convictions for violent crime, his bail should be reduced. Rock County District Court Judge Timothy Connell denied the request.

A pre-trial hearing was tentatively scheduled for March 26.

In September, a Rock County grand jury indicted Swaney on first- and second-degree murder charges in the death of Carrie Nelson. The 20-year-old was found beaten to death at Blue Mounds State Park in May 2001.

Swaney had just finished serving time in South Dakota for grand theft and burglary when he was charged with Nelson's death during a robbery at Blue Mounds State Park.

Investigators used a watch found at the scene and a DNA analysis of Swaney to finally make the arrest. Prosecutors allege that Swaney beat Nelson with a rock.
