Man Pleads Guilty In Killing Of Man Found In Lake

VIRGINIA, Minn. (WCCO) ― A St. Paul man has pleaded guilty to killing another man in 2005 and then sinking the body in a northern Minnesota lake.

Twenty-seven-year-old Andy Wetherill pleaded guilty Tuesday in St. Louis County District Court to unintentional second-degree murder in the death of Gabriel William Gonzalez. Under a deal with prosecutors he will get about 12 years in prison.

Wetherill says he hit the 24-year-old Gonzalez over the head with a flashlight in Wetherill's home in April 2005. He told the court they fought over the cost of work Gonzalez was doing at Wetherill's home, though authorities had said the dispute involved a drug debt.

The defendant told the court he attached concrete blocks to Gonzalez's body, then sunk it in Neff Lake near Aurora. Wetherill's father was building a cabin on the lake, and found the body a few weeks later.

He was arrested Aug. 14, 2007 in south Minneapolis on an active St. Louis County arrest warrant.
