Man And His Pit Bull Locked Up for Street Robbery
ST. PAUL (WCCO) ―
A 38-year-old man is in jail and his pit bull is at the pound after a robbery in St. Paul early Wednesday morning. Police say the man used his dog named Cane to intimidate the victim in the parking lot of a Wendy's at University Avenue and Dale Street.
St. Paul police spokesman Tom Walsh says he can't remember a dog used as a weapon before.
"That's pretty frequent that pit bulls will be used to protect territory or turf. This is the first time that I can recall a pit bull was used to intimidate somebody to create fear and to cause them to give up their money," said Walsh.
A pound supervisor said Cane has been well-behaved since his arrival.
"He will get two or three meals a day and he'll be under our control for awhile until we get clearance from the police department," said Bill Stephenson, Animal Control Supervisor for St. Paul."
Cane will have lots of pit bull company at the pound since they are commonly picked up as strays in the city. Cane's pound companions will also include a
monkey named Bam Bam who was living illegally in the city and will soon leave town for an animal sanctuary.
Walsh expects charges will be filed against Cane's owner. No word on what that will mean for Cane.
