Charges: Man Sets Off Pipe Bomb At Ex-Wife's Home

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― A Minneapolis man has been charged for allegedly using a pipe bomb to blow up and set fire to a Golden Valley home.

Robert Hertel, 50, has been charged with first-degree arson for allegedly igniting a pipe bomb which caused the home on the 5000 block of Basset Creek Drive to go up in flames.

At the scene, police recovered the makings of a pipe bomb including red electrical tape, wiring and galvanized piping.

According to the criminal complaint, the home was that of Hertel's ex-wife who recently passed away. The daughter of his ex-wife told police that Hertel was angry with her family because of allegations that Hertel sexually abused some grandchildren from another marriage.

When police searched Hertel's home they recovered items matching those found at the fire scene including red electrical tape, wiring and powder from firecrackers, according to court papers.

If convicted, Hertel faces up to 20 years in prison.
