A Minneapolis woman on her way home from her daughter's graduation
party will face criminal vehicular homicide charges for striking a man
in south Minneapolis on Sunday morning. The victim died of his injuries
on Tuesday.
According to the criminal complaint, Kirsten B. Driscoll, 49, was seen stumbling out of her car after the accident on Lake Street at 39th Avenue South. Police said her blood alcohol level was 0.19.
Police said Christopher Iverson, 48, was waiting at a bus stop when Driscoll struck him so hard, he was knocked out of his shoes. When police arrived, they found Iverson with a pool of blood behind his head and a witness said he was gasping for breath.
Iverson was listed in critical condition at Hennepin County Medical Center upon arrival, but he died on Tuesday afternoon.
Driscoll's currently standing charge of criminal vehicular operation are expected to be upgraded to criminal vehicular homicide, authorities said.
Driscoll was driving a black Audi, which ended up on the sidewalk on the northeast corner of the intersection, resting against a walk signal post. What remained of a Metro Transit bus shelter was lying on top of the vehicle. Other debris, including a metal trash can that had been bolted to the sidewalk, was found across the street.
Witnesses told police Driscoll had been westbound on Lake Street in the center lane when she swerved to the right, driving up on to the sidewalk and struck Iverson. After the crash, police found Driscoll on a bench. Police said she had watery, bloodshot eyes, had trouble standing and smelled of alcohol.
"I was just coming from my daughter's graduation party," Driscoll told police. "I took Lake Street because the freeway is closed and I just, I don't know just feel asleep."
