Park Rapids Woman Charged With Shooting 2 Men

PARK RAPIDS, Minn. (AP) ― A Park Rapids woman was charged Wednesday with shooting and wounding two Park Rapids men, including her ex-boyfriend, in an incident that ended after she allegedly shot at state troopers who were trying to arrest her.

The charges filed in Hubbard County against Stephanie Ann Wehmas, 20, include two counts of attempted murder and three counts of assault.

Wehmas is accused of shooting Cody Allen Paulson, 18, and Jason Howard Walker, 21, early Monday. Paulson was wounded in his upper left thigh and Walker was shot in his left hand.

The criminal complaint said Wehmas, who is Paulson's ex-girlfriend, confronted the men outside a home in Clover Township, north of Park Rapids, after Paulson's current girlfriend, Candace Crouse, spotted someone crouching by their vehicles.

Wehmas asked about Paulson's whereabouts and shot at Crouse as she ran inside, the complaint alleged. Paulson then went out to his vehicle, thinking Wehmas had left, but she was still there, it said.

Standing just a few feet from Paulson, Wehmas pointed a rifle at him and said, "I am going to shoot you," the complaint alleged. He tried to grab the gun barrel, but Wehmas allegedly shot him in the leg. The bullet just missed his femoral artery, the complaint said.

After shooting Paulson, Wehmas shot at Walker and struck him in the hand, severing part of his index finger, according to the complaint. Bullet fragments also struck his chest. She kept shooting at Walker but missed, the complaint said.

Wehmas then tossed the .22-caliber rifle into the woods and drove off, the complaint said. A state trooper later spotted her car several miles away near Osage. When backup officers arrived, they approached her vehicle and Wehmas fired at them through the rear window, breaking it, the complaint alleged. Officers awaited further backup and arrested her a few hours later without further incident.

A .30-06 rifle and spent cartridge were found in her car.

Wehmas could not be reached for comment on the charges. Hubbard County jail inmates aren't allowed to take calls, and jail officials didn't know if she had an attorney.
