Northfield Man Pleads Guilty In Attack

HASTINGS, Minn. (AP) ― A Northfield man has pleaded guilty in the beating and torture of a mentally disabled man in Dakota County last fall.

John Maxwell Maniglia, 20, pleaded guilty to kidnapping, third-degree assault and theft Tuesday on the day jury selection was to begin in his trial.

Maniglia will get eight years in prison at his sentencing June 15. That's twice the state sentencing guidelines.

Maniglia and four others were charged in connection with the beating and torture of 24-year-old Justin Hamilton. Hamilton was twice lured from his home Oct. 10 and 11 of last year, taken to a rural area and tortured for hours.

A 16-year-old girl had told Maniglia that Hamilton had assaulted her, but prosecutors say she made that up.

Three other men face charges in the case.
