Woman Charged With Backing Over Tent, Killing Baby

OLIVIA, Minn. (WCCO) ― The woman who allegedly ran over a tent and killed a 4-month-old baby boy Sunday morning drank most of a 1-liter bottle of Southern Comfort and smoked marijuana the night before, according to charges filed in Renville County.

Nicolle Prechel, 31, was camping in the Beaver Falls campground with her 7-year-old daughter.

According to the charges, she drove her daughter to the bathroom facilities and then, while reversing her van back into the campground, drove over a nearby tent and dragged it 14 feet before crashing into a pole.

Inside the tent was Sheena Hinshaw and her baby Whyatt Sander. The boy's father, Jacob Sander, was not in the tent at the time, but saw everything. Jacob Sander is Prechel's cousin.

The child was pronounced dead at Redwood Falls Area Hospital. Hinshaw was treated and released for her injuries.

The charges state after the incident, Prechel drove herself and her daughter to the hospital in Redwood Falls. When she arrived, she told authorities, "Oh my God, I killed my cousin!"

Prechel has been charged with seven criminal counts, including criminal vehicular homicide, driving while impaired and driving after suspension. Prechel's driver's license was suspended in May 2004 and hasn't been reinstated since.

Prechel is set to appear in court Wednesday at 11 a.m.

The visitation for Whyatt is on Thursday and the funeral will take place Friday.
