An 11-year-old Shakopee boy hit by a suspected drunk driver on Monday has died. Nick Hagadorn died at Hennepin County Medical Center Friday morning. Nick was riding his bicycle at the intersection of 17th Avenue and Marschall Road around 8:30 Monday night, when police say he was hit by a pick-up truck.
"Nick, he was full of life. Everybody knew Nick. He had a big personality," said his Aunt Megan Martin.
The man police believe hit Nick is 40-year-old Randal Hennes. So far he has been charged with hitting Nick and driving off. But the Scott County Attorney's office said those charges could now change.
On Friday evening, Nick's family gathered at his home to remember the 11-year-old with a big smile. They said his biggest feature was his hear. He was always looking out for other kids, including his 9-year-old brother Alex.
"You could be the new kid to the neighborhood and Nick would make sure that the new kid had friends. He even found friends for his cousin here, who's a girl, and she didn't have any when she came to visit," said Martin.
Martin and other family members talked about Nick's love for baseball, biking, and skateboarding. They wanted to thank the police officer, and a 20-year-old man who they have not met, for stopping to give Nick CPR after the accident.
"Without their assistance Nick would have died on scene. They gave the family an additional three days to say their goodbyes and spend the last moments of Nick's life together," said family friend Jessica Reider.
The Hagadorns are hoping Nick can continue to touch the lives of others. They plan on donating his organs.
"The family thought that this would be a great way for Nick to kind of live on and help others through his death," said Reider.
At the intersection where Nick was killed, flowers remind the neighborhood of what happened Monday night. His family also hopes those flowers remind people of the dangers of drinking and driving.
"I hope we'll make one person think that one drink, even if you have one drink it's not a good idea to get behind the wheel," said Martin.
Nick's family said he wanted to be a police officer some day. He would have been in the 6th grade this fall. Police said he was not wearing a helmet, but it may not have mattered due to the extent of his injuries. An autopsy showed that a part of his heart was torn after the accident.
Funeral Services for Nick will be Tuesday at St. Mark's Church in Shakopee. A fund has been set up to help cover Nick's medical costs. Donations are being accepted at any Wells Fargo Bank. A fundraiser will also be held Saturday at Shakopee's Pearson Elementary School from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
