Charges are expected against a Minneapolis man who the Anoka County Sheriff Office's said caused a crash that killed one of his passengers over the weekend.
It was supposed to be a weekend meant to celebrate the summer. But taking just a half mile trip to a party after Pioneer Days early Saturday morning proved to be a deadly mistake for 30-year-old Jeff Hettwer.
The driver, 25-year-old Christopher Anderson, was arrested Saturday morning, not long after walking away from the scene of the crash in Oak Grove. Hettwer, an accomplished painter from Ham Lake, was killed in the crash.
Authorities say the car Anderson was driving hit a parked SUV and stopped about 200 feet down Zion Parkway.
For Hettwer, the Northrup King Building in Northeast Minneapolis served as studio space for the artist. Friends describe him as a man passionate about his abstract paintings.
"Many of these pieces are also relating to his wife," said building manager Debbie Woodward. "They really were best friends it's just something you can see."
Woodward doesn't want people to remember Hettwer for the way his life ended, but for how he lived it.
"It's not just an incident that ended his life but just the life that he had and who he was that's important to remember," she said.
The Anoka County Sheriff's Office believes alcohol played a role in the crash. Two other passengers in the car were taken to the hospital with injuries, but they're expected to be OK.
