Mpls. Police Warn Of Purse, Motor Vehicle Thefts

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― Three purse thefts have been reported in the last week primarily in Stevens Square, Whittier and Lowry Hill East neighborhoods.

Minneapolis Police say in all three cases, a woman was walking alone when someone ran up behind them, grabbed her purse and ran. In one case, there were two men that approached the woman but in all other cases, it was one man.

None of the victims reported any injuries.

The purses were recovered in two cases, but in one case, credit cards from the purse were used at a gas station.

One incident occurred around 8 p.m. Oct. 26, on the 2500-block of Harriet Avenue South when the victim was approaching her apartment building. Three juveniles were arrested in the case.

Another occurred around 1:30 p.m., Wednesday on the 2900-block of Hennepin Avenue South when the victim was walking on Lake Street.

The third incident occurred around 11:45 p.m., Wednesday near the intersection of 26th Street and Stevens Avenue.

Police say there were also 35 reported thefts from motor vehicles in the fifth precinct from Oct. 20 to 26. Fifteen of those thefts occurred north of Lake Street and nine of the cases were in or on the border of the Lowry Hill East neighborhood.

In most cases, police say the window was broken to access valuables inside. In six of the 15 cases, a GPS unit was stolen. Stolen laptops were reported in two of the cases and stolen iPods were reported in two others.

Police would like to remind drivers to place valuables from your vehicle in your trunk, before you arrive at your destination.
