Minneapolis police say the teen that was killed early Saturday morning near Hiawatha Avenue South was stabbed in the stomach by the man he was trying to rob.
Charges state Tim Jackson, 17, and his friend, Andre Sheldon Whirlwind Horse, also 17, physically assaulted and attempted to rob a man near the Midtown Greenway.
According to the medical examiner, Jackson died of a single stab wound to the abdomen after being found by police near 28th Street and Hiawatha Avenue South, while they were responding to a report of a robbery.
The robbery victim told police he was walking home from a friend's house when he passed the two suspects. He said he became nervous and began walking fast, then heard footsteps running up behind him.
One of the suspects asked him why he was walking so fast. At that time, the victim said he took a knife out of his pocket and held it by his side as he told the suspect that he was concerned because people had recently been "messed up" in the area.
The suspect then swung at the victim, hitting him in the head with a closed fist. The victim told police he was also hit in the back shoulder by one of the suspects. The victim said he then turned and saw Jackson behind him, ready to hit him with a closed fist. The victim then stabbed Jackson, before fleeing the scene, heading toward the greenway.
The two suspects ran after the victim but he was able to reach Hiawatha Avenue where he called 911 and reported what had happened. According to police, signs of injury to the victim's face were apparent. The robbery victim remained on the scene until police arrived and said he pulled the knife out to protect himself but the teens started hitting him.
Whirlwind Horse is in custody and has been charged with the robbery. He admitted to police that he and Jackson were trying to rob the victim.
The case is now in the hand of the Hennepin County Attorney's office and prosecutors say they are looking at the circumstances of Jackson's death and the associated robbery to see if any charges are warranted.
