The misdemeanor drunken driving trial of the mayor of Hampton had hardly started before it ended in a mistrial in Dakota County.
The judge stopped the trial of Mayor Timothy Skog shortly after opening statements Wednesday. Skog was arrested last year for allegedly driving while impaired.
Prosecutors say a sheriff's deputy arrested Skog after he allegedly staggered from his car and hid behind two fire trucks instead of following orders and standing still.
It was Skog's second DWI arrest in two years.
The judge declared a mistrial after the deputy made repeated references from the witness stand to Skog's preliminary breath test. It had been ruled inadmissible.
Skog was elected mayor of the city of about 750 residents in 2004. Hampton is just east of Farmington.
Driving while impaired is a gross misdemeanor. He's also charged with obstructing the legal process, a misdemeanor.
