Victims Talk About Masked Robberies Near Lakes

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― Victims of a string of robberies near and around Lake Calhoun and Lake of the Isles are talking about the armed attacks. Minneapolis Police are still searching for a group of two to six men they believe are responsible.

Investigators say the masked robbers are targeting couples walking around the lakes after dark. Their victims have lingering affects from the armed attacks.

"It's always beautiful. It's nice because there's a certain place where downtown just reflects right off the lake, especially if it's a full moon. It's just really pretty to walk around there at night," said robbery victim Danielle Treat.

That's what Treat and her friend were doing when they heard two men close behind them.

"They had the gun, they didn't say anything about having a gun, they just waved it at us and pointed at our heads," said Treat. "And they proceeded to put their hands in my pockets and they took my wallet and my cell phone."

Moments after Treat and her friend were robbed, two men walking around the lakes passed them going the opposite direction. Those two men told Treat they were also ambushed.

"They just took things out of their pockets, their wallets, their cell phones and one of the guy's keys," said Treat.

Two days earlier, Sarah Ahmed and a male friend were walking home a few blocks from the lake when two men stopped them.

"They tell me to give them my purse, and I was just like, 'I'm not giving you my purse, what are you talking about?' Then I guess he pulled the gun out a little bit," said Ahmed.

She gave up her purse, which neighbors later found with her wallet still inside.

"My ID and my debit card were left, actually my checkbook was left," said Ahmed, but her keys and cell phone were gone. "I was just more mad that it happened to me cause it's such a hassle."

That's something that Treat can relate to.

"These guys managed to chare more than $300 to my TCF bank account," she said.

Now both women said they are more careful.

"It truly didn't hit me until a couple days later when I realized that, wow, I'm never going to feel comfortable walking around the lake at night anymore," said Treat.

Minneapolis Police said they do have some leads in the case. It's a challenge because victims didn't get a good look at the men since it was dark and they were masked.
