NE Minn. Inmate Escapes
DULUTH, Minn. (AP) ―
Authorities are searching for an inmate who escaped from the Northeast Regional Corrections Center as he was about to be transferred to the St. Louis County Jail in Duluth.
The sheriff's office says 25-year-old Eugene Raymond Hawpetoss escaped Monday. Corrections officers, along with St. Louis County sheriff's deputies and a K-9 unit, searched the area but didn't find Hawpetoss.
Court records say Hawpetoss pleaded guilty in May to second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. He was sentenced to 39 months in prison, but the prison sentence was stayed for five years probation, including one year of local confinement.
Hawpetoss is described as 5 feet, 5 inches tall and 145 pounds. He was wearing a black hooded sweat shirt and long black shorts.
