Hugo Man Charged With Theft After Tornado

HUGO, Minn. (AP) ― A 25-year-old Hugo resident has been charged with stealing beer, peanuts, chips and DVDs from a neighbor's home that had been damaged by a tornado.

Brandon P. Hanson was charged last week with felony theft.

Sheriff's deputies were suspicious and stopped Hanson June 30 as he tried to walk out of the neighborhood. According to court documents, deputies heard the clinking of bottles in Hanson's backpack.

Washington County Sheriff William Hutton says there's been no other looting since the tornado. He says a community member reported Hanson and that deputies followed up.

Formal charges were filed last week.
