Man Gets 25 Years For Not Disclosing HIV Status

WATERLOO, Iowa (WCCO) ― A Plainfield, Iowa man who was charged with knowingly transmitting HIV was sentenced to 25 years in prison Friday.

Nick Rhoades had pleaded guilty to failing to disclose his HIV status before having sex with a Cedar Falls man last June.

The two men exchanged messages in an Internet chat room before meeting at the victim's home.

The victim has since tested negative for HIV. But he says that while their contact was consensual, Rhoades denied he had any sexually transmitted infections.

Judge Bradley Harris gave Rhoades the maximum punishment for the class B felony.
