Police are searching for the vehicle involved in a hit and run that put an 8-year-old boy in the hospital.
Police say Marlo Jiles was biking near the 200 block of Jackson Avenue North in Hopkins when he was hit by an SUV.
Witnesses said the driver didn't even attempt to stop.
Remarkably -- Marlo is going to be OK, but police are doing less well when it comes to finding who hit him.
"His legs are scratched up and he has one broken rib and a pinched lung," said Marlo's mom, Maggie Copeland.
For his mom this has been especially traumatic. In 2002, her 2-year-old son, Marlo's brother, was beaten to death by his Godmother.
That's why Copeland is so thankful that Marlo is doing so well for being tossed about 20 feet.
Marlo was riding his bike down a hill right into the street when he was struck. He also wasn't wearing a helmet.
The neighbor who rushed out of her home to comfort Marlo said he was bleeding profusely from his head. She worried he might die
"Keep this kid talking. I need to know if I'm sitting with this kid and the inevitable is going to happen ... do I need to be praying or just try to keep him conscious," said Jessica Slayton, a neighbor.
Hopkins police said they have little information about the car that hit him other than it was a maroon or burgundy SUV.
Ironically, the child's family has a similar colored car with front end damage and family members were briefly questioned, but have been ruled out because the damage occurred last month.
The family is angry that the driver has yet to come forward.
"You have touched everybody here and made them really see how wrong you were. You don't do that. You just don't hit a kid and keep going," said Veronica Ellis, Marlo's aunt.
The police said they really need the public's help in finding the driver.
Police also the driver of the vehicle is in a lot more trouble now if they would have just stopped last night because clearly the child was riding into the street.
