Police arrested 34-year-old Christopher Buessmann after a witness followed him after he allegedly hit Heather Solberg who was crossing Highway 169 in Champlin.
Hennepin County
A mother of two was killed by a hit-and-run driver who struck her as she crossed Highway 169 in Champlin early Sunday morning.
A witness followed the car that struck her and a driver was arrested about 20 minutes later.
Heather Solberg was on her way home from watching fireworks with friends when she struck in the crosswalk at Hayden Lake Road.
Champlin Police Chief Dave Schwarze said alcohol was believed to be involved and credited the witness for helping solve the case so quickly.
"They were able to follow the vehicle, come up with a license plate and forward that on to law enforcement agencies, who, within a few minutes, were able to locate the vehicle," said Schwarze.
Police arrested 34-year-old Christopher Buessmann about 20 minutes after the accident. He is expected to face criminal charges this week.
His 23-year-old female passenger, who drove the vehicle after the accident, also may face charges, according to the chief.
Solberg is survived by a 13-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son.
"She was always there for me and my friends and I could talk to her about anything," Nina Solberg said about her mother.
Nash Solberg said his mother, who helps manage the Champlin High School wrestling team, always supported him at sporting events.
"Everybody loved her. She was a mom to everybody," said Nash.
Solberg is also survived by a younger brother.
"It's just unfair when someone's life is taken so tragically and quickly," said Mark Hollingsworth.
Regarding the arrest, Solberg's brother said "it helps that there's some closure for unanswered questions. But it won't change anything."
Solberg's family said they are grateful for the outpouring of support since word has spread about her sudden death. A fund to help her children will be set up soon.
