Police are warning women at the University of Minnesota to watch their backs. Over the weekend gunmen stole purses from at least a half-dozen women near campus.
So far no one's been hurt. Thousands of U students are getting warnings about the robberies through the campus e-mail notification system.
"I just find it very shocking," said student Whitney Weber.
Weber said because of the robberies she will consider using the U's 24/7 free escort service. University of Minnesota Police Chief Greg Hestness said it would be a good idea for all students to consider using the service.
"They are student escorts but they have our police radios so if there are any difficulties they can get directly in touch with our dispatch center," Hestness said.
Any student can get an escort 24-hours-a-day by calling 612-624-WALK.
University Police say at least three of the robberies are connected with the same suspects responsible, but the suspect information is limited -- two, possibly three young men with a dark-colored getaway car.
With such vague descriptions, women will have to walk more carefully in the neighborhoods in and around the U.
