'U' Basketball Player Questioned In Laptop Theft

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― A University of Minnesota basketball player already suspended from the team after being arrested for shoplifting is suspected in another theft.

On Saturday night, someone stole a laptop from a freshman's dorm room at Territorial Hall on the University's East Bank. The laptop has since been returned.

University police officials said freshman forward Royce White was interviewed by investigators and has acknowledged being in the building last Saturday night.

Some students first heard about the laptop theft after they received a crime safety alert from campus police on Tuesday night. The alert went to freshman like Emily Hanson who lives in Territorial Hall.

"Five males had come through Territorial and were checking on unlocked doors. Walking in to see if anyone was there, and kind of raiding the rooms to see if they could get anything," said Hanson.

Witnesses say one of the guys going into the rooms was around 7 feet tall.

Police are interviewing students and scanning surveillance tapes to get a better idea of who actually stole the laptop from a first floor room.

As for White, he has been suspended from the Gopher basketball team after being arrested for shoplifting at Macy's at Mall of America last month. He wore street clothes at Monday night's exhibition game and won't play in Friday's season opener against Tennessee Tech.

White is part of a touted recruiting class that includes transfer Trevor Mbakwe, who is also out indefinitely while a felony aggravated battery charge against him goes through the legal process.

White and Mbakwe were expected to give Minnesota some bulk and athleticism at the power forward spot. Damian Johnson and Paul Carter, who are more natural at small forward, will play more inside while White and Mbakwe are out.
