Young Man Tries To Rob New Brighton Garage Sale

NEW BRIGHTON, Minn. (WCCO) ― Garage sales are a way to make some quick cash, but a New Brighton woman got more than she bargained for.

Katy Livingston was just thinking about how productive her garage sale had been when a young man stopped by to check out what she had left. His demeanor made her uneasy -- a suspicion that was confirmed when he tried to grab her fanny pack.

"And I looked at him and said, 'What are you doing?' And he had his head down; I couldn't really see his face and then I realized what he was doing. So I put my hand on either side [of the pack] because I knew there was a lot of money in there," said Livingston.

While fighting her attacker, Livingston screamed for help. Her husband, who had been across the street, came running with a neighbor. Another man driving home from work also stopped to help. Livingston's attacker, realizing he was in trouble, pushed her down and started to run.

"The fact that he was a young guy made me angry. I even yelled at him as he was running, 'You're not going to get away with this.' Because I was really mad that he had the nerve to do that," said Livingston.

But the young man did get away, just not with Livingston's money. She admits her fanny pack won't win her any style points but she recommends to anyone having a sale that they wear one. She said if she had had a cash box sitting out, all of her money would be gone.

"I just thought, 'I don't want to give this away' because it was a lot. It was a lot of money," said Livingston.

Livingston said her other bit of advice would be to have another person working with you on the sale at all times. She also recommends keeping the service door from the garage to the house locked while the garage sale is taking place.
