Robber Wrestled To The Ground In Eagan

EAGAN, Minn. (WCCO) ― A robbery at a Holiday gas station in Eagan was stopped short Sunday night when the robber was tackled to the ground and restrained.

What first caught Jochen Liedner's eye wasn't the black shirt covering the robber's head, but that he knocked over the glove display before pushing a woman out of the way.

"He went in front of me in the queue and said, 'give me the cash, I'm not kidding you,'" said Liedner.

It only took Liedner a second or two to try to tackle the robber to the ground. Police later identified him as 21-year-old Kevin Connors of Apple Valley.

"I wasn't scared," Liedner said. "I checked out his body weight and he didn't seem to be that strong."

Within seconds, another customer and store clerk stepped in to help out. They restrained the robber while Liedner pulled the shirt off his head. The three of them held him for a few seconds and only wrestled him down to the floor after he tried to escape.

"They did most of the work. They took him to the corner of the gas station and restrained him to the floor were basically he didn't move," Liedner said.

Eagan police arrived a few minutes later to find Connors on the ground. As they were reading him his Miranda rights, police say Connors tried to escape again by pushing his shoulder and head into their bodies. During the scuffle, he apparently said, "I'm sorry. I'm sorry for doing this."

While police say they don't want the public to put themselves in danger, Officer Danielle Anselment said, "We're glad everyone ended up ok in this case and had that witness not intervened, the subject might not have gone to jail that evening."

Liedner thought Connors might be desperate.

"I actually felt a little bit of pity for him in spite, of course, there was concern for everyone's safety," he said.

He also felt concern for the female clerk behind the counter who was clearly shaken up by an attempted robbery in a city where few of those ever happen.
