Police Investigate Rape At 'U' Dorm

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― Police are investigating reports that a teenager was raped inside her dorm room at the University of Minnesota.

Campus police tell us the incident happened early Sunday morning in one of the residence halls in the group of co-ed dorms on campus. The grouping of four dorms on the East Bank is also known as the superblock.

Officers say the alleged attacker is an acquaintance of the victim and lives in the same residence hall.

Investigators interviewed him and are waiting on evidence to come back.

As of right now, the alleged attacker hasn't been charged. If campus officials determine the young man to be a threat to other students, police say he could be asked to move out of the residence hall.

Roberta Gibbons is the associate director of the Aurora Center which helps rapes victims. Gibbons said when it comes to an acquaintance rape, the issue of women protecting themselves is clouded by the fact that they know and trust their attackers.

Gibbons said men and women should be looking for risk factors in men who display certain types of behavior. Some risk factors may include men who drink a lot and think of sex as a conquest, men who try to take control of relationships, or men who display what they call grooming behavior and try to feed women drinks and or get them into a room all alone.
